I'm Brandon Lum — a former finance professional turned software engineer. After a decade working in high-pressure roles at hedge funds and banks, I made the leap into tech to build real solutions and write clean, purposeful code.
Today, I focus on full-stack development with React, Node.js, and GraphQL. Whether it’s building internal tools, e-commerce platforms, or scaling frontends, I bring a business-minded approach to engineering. I'm currently working on client-facing projects and always exploring ways to improve user experience and performance.

At CaterPlace, I improved the admin panel by developing new features for reporting and customer data management, helping internal teams work more efficiently. I also enhanced the user experience by updating navigation and simplifying key workflows.
In addition to engineering tasks, I supported the marketing team by revising site content and aligning brand messaging. My work helped improve platform usability while contributing to CaterPlace’s growth and clarity online.
I helped redesign key components of the training platform using React, Tailwind CSS, and Vite, focusing on accessibility and responsiveness. One major deliverable was a Training Table that allowed firefighters to browse and enroll in learning opportunities.
Additionally, I built a Personnel Records page to help track and update clearances. I used GraphQL for optimized data loading and tested each feature thoroughly to ensure a smooth and intuitive experience.
At VIPERsurf, I streamlined the Docker-based development setup, making it significantly more accessible for Windows users. I also implemented a custom payment portal using Stripe, enabling seamless service upgrades and boosting revenue.
To improve security, I integrated AWS Secrets Manager and GitHub Actions secrets into the CI/CD pipeline. During this time, I also started building a mobile DJ booking app using React Native, focusing on UI responsiveness and scalability.
I contributed to full-stack features across multiple projects, gaining hands-on experience with React, Node.js, and MongoDB. Working closely with a small team, I built and deployed functional components that solved real user needs.
The role taught me how to write production-quality code, debug efficiently, and participate in Agile workflows. I also improved my communication through regular code reviews and team standups.

My day-to-day involved collaborating closely with traders, quants, and back office teams to ensure accurate and timely settlements across asset classes.
That experience gave me a deep understanding of complex systems, attention to detail under pressure, and the importance of reliability in high-stakes environments. It also laid the groundwork for my transition into engineering—where I now build software with an operator’s mindset.
